Listen

The Foundation put music on its own website more than twenty years ago and then the website went down. Twenty-eight audio files came back off the Internet Archive — the songs and romances of one disc, and the Symphony of Maqams with the two acts of Komde and Madan from another.

They are short. The Foundation published them with a note of its own — “These are 17 seconds samples only” — and asked people to write for the full recordings. That is what they still are, and what we can offer here: enough to hear the voice, the rubob, the shape of a line, and not a performance.

Full-length recordings are on the streaming services, and where a good one exists we link to it rather than host it. The right to publish the sound recordings is separate from the right to publish the compositions, and we have not yet established who holds it, so nothing longer goes up until that is answered in writing.

If you have a recording of his music — a tape, an air-check, a concert programme with a date on it — the Foundation would like to hear from you.

283 of them are byte-identical reissues of three others, listed on disc two below and played from their first release
All of it, end to end

Each rule below is drawn to one scale, two pixels to the second. The solid part is the excerpt. The dashed part is the rest of the recording, and it is drawn with no end on it because we do not know where it ends: the Foundation never published a running time for any of these tracks, and there is not a single timing in the 71 pages recovered from its site. Rather than draw a plausible bar we have drawn the ignorance.

Rethinking Maqam and Symphony

3 recordings

Only the cover image and the Foundation's news page survive; no sleeve text, no catalogue number, no release year was recovered. Three tracks, performed by the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra and the Tajik Symphony Orchestra.

Sitorai Man

22 recordings

Cover reads 'Sitorai Man / SONGS and ROMANCES / MAQOMS' SYMPHONY - Opera KOMDE va MADAN'. CD 1 holds 22 songs and romances, CD 2 three orchestral and operatic tracks. No label, catalogue number or year was recovered.

Disc 1 — Songs and romances

Disc 2 — Symphony of Maqams, and the two acts of Komde and Madan

These 3 tracks are not further recordings. Each is byte for byte the same file as a track on Rethinking Maqam and Symphony — same size, same SHA-256, same decoded-audio MD5, zero differing bytes — issued a second time under a second title. They are named here because that is what the disc contains, and played there because there is only one recording to play.

Longer than an excerpt

Full-length recordings are not published here. The right to publish a sound recording is separate from the right to publish the composition, and the Foundation has not yet established in writing who holds it — so nothing longer than the samples above is hosted on this site, and there is nothing here to download. What follows is other people's copies, on other people's services. Nothing is requested from either service until you press it: no player, no cookie, no third-party script loads with this page.
